PLAYFUL MUSIC EDUCATION FOR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

Hop & Hum

We are excited to provide playful music education classes (with a twist) for preschoolers here in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.Led by the principal horn of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra our classes creatively explore the elements of music through singing, playing instruments, dance, coordination focused movement, story time, and parachute fun, plus performances from Medbury School students! Our belief is that all music is essentially the same (just rearranged a bit differently) so we can absolutely learn all about the elements of music through music we all love.....Abba, country, Bach, songs from musicals, cool Kiwi kids music, brass band, Kiwi pop, film scores and Mozart with a sprinkling of Céline! Our goal is to create a fun musical experience where children can explore and connect alongside developing their communication, coordination and creativity skills. Our philosophy: by having fun, we learn, and by learning, we grow into creative, confident, well-rounded humans.

what to expect

WHAT TO EXPECT- Fun, creativity and connection are the best part!
- Music education focusing on the elements of music (pulse, rhythm, melody, dynamics, tempo).
- Hands on play and exploration with real instruments.
- Movement is a must. We dance, spin, skip, hop and even have musical obstacle course.
- Live performances from talented Medbury students (violin, saxophone, oboe, trombone, viola, flute, piano, cello, trumpet and more).
- Exposure to an eclectic range of music. We love classical, jazz, 90s pop, brass band, Kiwi music and of course lots of lovely kids music too.
The music selection is just as much for the adults as it is for our wee humans.

About

Kia ora, I’m Emma 👋
I’m a proud mum of two lovely humans (7 & 4) and also the principal horn with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
Alongside performing in the CSO, I am fortunate to be involved in helping to facilitating music sessions for people living with early onset dementia, recovering from a stroke in Burwood Hospital and have extensive experience working in specialist learning environments including mental health spaces, schools, early childcare centres and the University of Canterbury.I created Hop & Hum because I observed how exploring music education with my own children helped to build my connection with them. Alongside this I also noticed how their creativity, confidence and coordination bloomed.
I would love to explore this with your wee one too!

We would love to hear from you!
